Band 9: As technology advances, there is growing debate about the role of algorithms and artificial intelligence in decision-making processes, such as hiring, loan applications, and criminal justice. Some argue that algorithms are more objective and efficient than humans. Others worry about algorithmic bias and the potential for discrimination. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The rise of algorithms and AI in decision-making feels a bit like handing the keys of society to an invisible orchestra conductor. The music can become faster, sharper, and more precise – but who wrote the score, and who checks if it’s playing the wrong tune?

On one hand, supporters argue that AI systems bring efficiency and consistency. Unlike humans, algorithms do not get tired, emotional, or distracted. In areas like loan approvals or medical triage, AI can process vast amounts of data in seconds, identifying patterns that might escape human judgment. This can reduce delays, cut costs, and even improve accuracy. There is also the argument of objectivity: when designed well, algorithms can remove certain human biases such as favoritism or prejudice, leading to more standardized decisions.

However, critics point out that AI is not inherently neutral. Algorithms learn from historical data, and if that data reflects existing social inequalities, the system may reproduce or even amplify them. For example, if past lending practices favored certain groups, an AI trained on that data may continue the same pattern under the appearance of neutrality. Additionally, many AI systems operate as “black boxes,” meaning their decision-making processes are difficult to interpret. This lack of transparency raises serious concerns, especially in high-stakes areas like criminal justice, where individuals may be affected by decisions they cannot fully understand or challenge. Another issue is the erosion of human oversight: over-reliance on automated systems can lead to blind trust, reducing accountability when errors occur.

In my opinion, AI should not replace human decision-making but rather complement it. The strengths of AI – speed, scalability, and pattern recognition – are undeniable, but they must be balanced with human judgment, ethical reasoning, and accountability. Clear regulations, transparency requirements, and regular auditing of algorithms are essential to ensure fairness. Humans should remain “in the loop,” especially in decisions that significantly impact people’s lives.

Ultimately, AI is a powerful tool, not an infallible judge. Its value depends on how carefully it is designed, monitored, and integrated into society. Used wisely, it can enhance decision-making; used carelessly, it risks quietly reinforcing the very inequalities it aims to eliminate.
