Band 5+: Countries with a long average working time are more economically successful, but they are also likely to suffer from negative social consequences. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is an assertion that nations with long working hours are more likely to be more wealthy but simultaneously and they need to overcome some social downsides, however. From my perspective, I partly agree with this opinion and I will provide the explanation for my point of view in this essay.

On the one hand, it is unconvincing that spending more time at work will foster a country’ economy. Take for example, America, which has short working time, just around more than 6 hours per day but they often rank first among worldwide economic sectors due to its high-quality products and marketing strategies in order to boost their economy effectively. Compared to New Zealand, which is still a developing nation despite the fact that laborers need to work for nearly 50 hours per week.

On the other hand, prolonged working hours have a detrimental impact on both workers’ mental and physical health. To be more specific, some common health problems in laborers overtiming are depression, emotional disorders or cardiovascular disease. Moreover, scientists from Humans of New York have said that working for more than 8 hours per day has an adverse influence on human brains and lessens their productivity and also creativity. Furthermore, the lack of time for family interactions due to the hectic schedules may cause dissatisfaction and accidentally creates a “distance” between members. In addition, it is difficult and impossible to balance work and personal life when workers use most of their time at their workplace.

In conclusion, I partly agree with this assertion due to its impossibility. Although working long hours may seem to be effective in some countries, I believe that they should find a different way to improve their nations’ economy to avoid dreadful effects with laborers.
