Nowadays, many languages disappear every year. Some people believe this is not a serious issue because having fewer languages would make life simpler. I do not fully agree with this idea. I believe that although fewer languages can make communication easier, losing languages is still important and harmful.
On the one hand, having fewer languages can make life simpler. For example, if most people speak one common language, it is easier to travel, work and study in other countries. People can understand each other more easily, there will be fewer problems in communication. Also, governments and companies do not need to spend much money on translation or language education. From this view, fewer languages can save money and time.
On the other hand, languages are not only communication, as they represent cultural values. It shows how people think, see and understand the world. When a language dies, the culture and history also slowly disappear. For instance, the invasion of North America caused not only the disappearance of the Indian’s local language but also their culture, identity and history. In addition, the art and literature of nations are strongly related to their languages. As a result, losing any nations’ language could also impact their national heritage.
In conclusion, although fewer languages can make communication easier, I strongly believe that the loss of languages is a serious matter. Languages should be protected because they are an important part of culture, identity and history.
