There is a view that governments should invest in the development of art and sport for schoolchildren rather than in professional sports and art events. I do not agree with this view, as investment in professional sports and major cultural events can bring significant benefits to society.
Not only do professional sports improve a country’s international reputation, but they also inspire younger generations to take part in sport. When professional sports are well funded, athletes have access to better training facilities, experienced coaches, and greater opportunities for development. In Uzbekistan, for example, considerable investment has been made in football in recent years. Foreign coaches have been recruited, training conditions have improved, and successful players have received financial rewards. As a result, the Uzbekistan National Team qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. The tournament, in which Uzbekistan will compete against some of the world’s strongest teams, is watched by millions of people worldwide. Even if the team does not achieve outstanding results, participation alone will increase awareness of the country and strengthen its image abroad.
Art events can also have a positive impact on the economy. Attracting visitors from different countries, major exhibitions and festivals generate income for local businesses and support the tourism industry. Tourists, many of whom spend money on accommodation, transport, restaurants, and entertainment, contribute directly to local economies. As a result, additional employment opportunities may be created in tourism-related sectors. For instance, local residents may open guesthouses, souvenir shops, or other businesses aimed at serving visitors. Furthermore, art events can encourage talented individuals to develop their creative abilities. Many people have artistic talent but choose not to pursue it because they believe there are limited opportunities in their country. By highlighting successful artists and their achievements, such events can motivate people to build careers in fields they genuinely enjoy.
In conclusion, investment in professional sports can enhance a country’s international reputation, while art events can support economic growth and create opportunities for creative individuals. Rather than being an alternative to investment in schoolchildren, these activities can indirectly benefit young people by providing inspiration and positive role models.
