Band 7+: In many countries, people now wear western-style dresses such as suits and jeans rather than traditional clothing. Why is this? Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In many part of the world, people are abandoning their traditional attire in favor of modern global fashion such as suits and jeans. This modification is mainly driven by globalization and intention to change the lifestyles. Despite the fact that it offers certain practical benefits, I believe it also raises the concerns regarding the preservation of cultural identity.

Firstly, the main reason of this trend is the effect of globalization and media. People increasingly imitate Western styles because films, online platforms and social media constantly promote global fashion brands. In addition, the rapid global expansion of popular companies like Zara and H&M has made modern clothing widely accessible, especially to younger generations. Traditional clothing, in the contrast, can be quite bulky and pricey due to the materials and craftsmanship. Therefore, most people reserve them for special occasions such as ceremonies and funerals. In comparison the modern outfits are more comfortable, accessible and suitable for work or study environments.

In terms of impact, this trend brings both benefits and drawbacks. On the positive side global fashion is convenient, affordable and widely accepted in professional settings and helps people adapt to today’s fast-paced lifestyle. However, the decline of traditional attire can have serious cultural consequences. When national dress disappears from everyday life, younger generations may lose their connection to long-standing customs which gradually causes weakening cultural identity and reducing the diversity that enriches societies.

In conclusion, although modern global fashion provides comfort and convenience, the gradual abandonment of traditional clothing poses a threat to cultural identity. Therefore, it is essential to promote and preserve national attire so that future generations maintain a strong connection to their cultural roots.
