Band 7+: In many countries, people wear more Western-style clothes (suits and jeans) than their traditional clothes. Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Western-style clothes have gained popularity globally in the process of globalization. While it brings individuals practical benefits, it also leads to concerns about the loss of cultural identity, traditional diversity and local businesses. This essay will analyze the underlying factors, exploring both merits and drawbacks.

One of the main reasons is the influence of globalization and media. In the past several decades, the economic activities and trade among different regions have introduced Western clothing to other areas, namely the East. From suits and ties for formal conditions to hoodies, jeans and even pajamas for casual scenarios. These clothes are designed for different purposes. The functionality and comfort stand out quickly when Easterners have tried them. On top of that, the mindset behind the Western styles allows one to dress what they want the outside world to know about them and what they are comfortable with. Western fashion encourages individuality if compared to Eastern one which is deeply bonded with local culture, religion and historical contexts. Reveling skin, trying cross-gender clothing and dressing to be a crowd standout are not considered taboo, respectively. It not only enables convenience and comfort but also enhances confidence and versatility in oneself.

While this shift has positive aspects such as comfort and confidence, it has also raised concerns about the loss of cultural identity and the impact on local businesses. If the general public starts to care less and less, the traditions would experience a loss eventually. In terms of local businesses, the popularity of Western clothes can gradually take over its market share.

In conclusion, the global inclination towards Western clothing is a multifaceted issue, deeply intertwined with globalization, media influence, and the evolution of individual expression. While it offers practical benefits and aligns with contemporary notions of freedom and individuality, it also poses a risk to cultural diversity and traditional industries. Balancing these aspects is crucial in shaping a world that appreciates both global trends and local heritage.
