Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 8+: In many countries, some students live with their families while studying, but other students prefer to attend universities in other cities. Do the advantages of living away from home outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In various nations, university students often face the choice of staying with their families or moving away to another city. While both options have both merits and demerits, I contend that the advantages of living away from family outweigh the disadvantages because it fosters independence and broader cultural understanding in spite of less familial support.

The main reason for my stance is that living away from home helps foster independence and essential life skills in young people. Without help from families, they have to learn to manage daily tasks and make decisions independently. These can range from managing budgets, paying bills and having to deal with unexpected difficulties, all of which forces students to be self-reliant and responsible. Furthermore, by having to accept the responsibility for their own decisions, they develop maturity and confidence. Consequently, the young person is better equipped with the tools and virtues which prepare them for success in life.

Another reason for my position is that pursuing education in a different region enhances young people’s adaptability by exposing them to broader horizons. By immersing in a different culture and meeting new people, students are exposed to new perspectives and cultural differences. Such experiences allow students to develop social skills and open their minds, enabling them to be more open-minded and flexible.

Admittedly, choosing to attend universities in other cities may have a negative impact on well-being due to missing family support. This is because acclimatizing to a new environment is often a stressful period and the lack of immediate support during illness or difficult times can lead to emotional stress and isolation. This is further exacerbated by the fact newfound cultural barriers can make it difficult to make friends, contributing to even more loneliness. If students don’t develop the necessary coping skills to deal with these challenges, it can take a toll on their mental health and even degrade academic performance over time.

In conclusion, although studying away from home presents its own set of unique challenges, I strongly believe that the benefits can overshadow the potential negatives. By embracing the opportunity to live independently and explore different cultures, students can develop important life skills and broaden their horizons in a way that is not possible within the comfort of their homes.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Read the following text from an educational magazine. Some people believe that university students are required to attend classes. Opinions are divided on whether class attendance should remain mandatory or optional for university students.
