In many first-world countries, purchasing items has become a pleasure instread buying the essentials. While some enjoy this development, other stand against it. On this essay I will provide the reasons why this is a notorious habit that should not happen.
First of all, some people deside to participate in shopping sprees so they can deal with the mental issues. To be more specific, they believe retail therapy equals to psychotherapy and buying staff is going to make them feel better and forget their worries. However, this kind of behavior leads them into finding satisfaction on materials and is only temporary where after it disappears, they go back again and do the same thing. This turns into overconsumption which is another very important point. In the same way, overconsumption is a substantial problem rooted on the enjoyment of shopping. It has caused individuals vast financial difficulties they can not pay off successfully. This creates an infinite cycle of mental turmoil where dealing with debt while buying more things to surpress this negative feeling.
Another major turndown is the waste of natural resourses. To elaborate on that, those products that are conctantly being purchased have a harmful effect to the environment. For example, the amount of petrol that is being used to produce and transport all these materials has become unsustainable for the ecosystem to handle while at the same time hurt biodiversity. The last but not least serious problem is the rising quantity of litter. In other words, many people regret put money into all this items and despose them. This generates to the landfield getting fulled with waste causing even more harm to the marine life.
To sum up, I believe shopping for entertainment has a negative impact into society and the planet. It should not be incouraged to any individual, not only for their personal wellbeing but also for the collective one.
