The significance of physical strength and mental strength in succeeding in sports has sparked lots of controversies. Some people say that muscle is of utmost importance while others value mental health. Although both views are valid, I lean towards the latter.
Many might say that the major determinant of athletic achievements is physical power. Technically, it is true that only with strong muscles can people gain the agility and the stamina, neither of whose presentation will lead to failure. Swimming athletes exemplify this perfectly. Those who have more powerful shoulders and thighs, thus get the swiftness and endurance, often ultimately get the victory. This is indeed applicable to other counterparts of swimming. Therefore, aiming at medals is tantamount to heading for strong physique.
Although the aforementioned point seems to stand to reason, I believe that to have a successful athletics career, mental toughness plays a more pivotal role. Undeniably, bodily power only gives you a headstart. It is the mentality that makes you thrive. Without tenacity, no matter how muscular a person is, he will be inclined to giving up. Grit will grant one high concentration and positivity so that he can persist in his goal. A real-life illustration is Lionel Messi, who has made his name as one of the greatest footballers in history despite his setback in terms of height with pure perseverance. Hence, in my opinion, the weight that mental strength carries over other factors is unparalleled.
In conclusion, notwithstanding that brawn lays the foundation for professionalisation in sports, I believe that people will reap more benefits from establishing a good mindset if wanting to flourish in the athletic field.
