Band 8+: It has been suggested that all young adults should be required to undertake a period of unpaid work helping people in the community. Would the drawbacks of such a requirement be greater than the benefits to the community and the individual young adults?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the contemporary era, it is argued that adolescents should engage in unpaid voluntary work to support those in need. While this practice may bring numerous positives for the youth and society, the overall impact is tremendously negative.

On the one hand, when teenagers get involved in unpaid work, it positively affects the development of their soft skills and moral values. Firstly, voluntary work requires a myriad of skills related to leadership, teamwork, communication, and time management; therefore, these competencies are practiced and improved whenever they participate in community work. Additionally, helping others enables young people to understand the predicaments of those in need, such as the disabled and the poor, fostering empathy and gratitude for their own circumstances. Take me as an example, through voluntary work, I have learned communication skills and time management, which provide numerous opportunities for the future.

On the other hand, although there are benefits when young people take part in community work voluntarily, the drawbacks are more significant. It is undeniable that money and time are crucial factors that help teenagers improve their knowledge both in and out of their profession. Participating in unpaid work could hinder their academic and career growth as they may lack the money and time to enroll in classes related to their major. Moreover, the technical skills mentioned above can be studied in universities or various other environments, not just through volunteer work. These days, most businesses require applicants to have professional and soft skills as well as specialized knowledge to complete assigned tasks well. As a result, the rise in unpaid positions could lead to a considerable shortage of skilled labor in crucial fields like medicine, technology, and education, thereby hindering societal development.

In conclusion, while voluntary work for the young generation can bring several advantages, the disadvantages it brings about are more significant.
