In modern times, some people believe that advancements in technology lead to the disappearance of traditional cultures. From my perspective, I only partly agree with this statement because, in some cases, technology has the ability to promote and preserve traditions.
To begin with, it is understandable that the continuous development of technology poses certain threats to the conservation of cultures. One clear threat is the rapid acceleration of technological advancements, particularly with the spread of the internet. As a result, individuals can easily access different traditions and global trends. Consequently, some people begin to adopt foreign trends, leading them to overlook the value of their own country’s customs. For example, young Vietnamese individuals, such as Chu Nguyen Quang Vinh, may be influenced by foreign traditions they encounter online or on social media, leading them to aspire to study abroad while disregarding their own cultural heritage. Moreover, another threat is that the rise of computers and smartphones has increased the popularity of various forms of entertainment. As a result, instead of participating in traditional games like tug-of-war or rope skipping, people often prefer to stay at home engaged in video games or watching television for entertainment. If this trend continues, the importance of protecting national cultural identity may diminish in favor of entertainment choices.
Nevertheless, it is essential to recognize that advancements in technology also offer notable benefits for preserving and promoting traditional culture. In terms of heritage protection, technological development can assist governments in reconstructing or repairing severely damaged cultural sites. For instance, in Vietnam, scientists have used renewable technology to restore the One Pillar Pagoda, allowing the younger generation to appreciate the true beauty of traditional architecture and historical life. Furthermore, the widespread internet enables the sharing and promotion of cultural practices. Through platforms like TikTok and Facebook, people can easily learn about the customs of their country and create blogs or videos sharing stories about the origins of their traditions. This not only makes young people more interested in their national cultures but also enhances citizens’ awareness of the importance of safeguarding their cultural identity.
In conclusion, I believe that technological advancements present both challenges and benefits for the preservation and promotion of culture.
