In modern life, food and beverages are produced with a high level of sugar this leads to health issues. It has been suggested that increasing the cost of these sugary products could deter consumers from buying them. I strongly disagree that this suggestion is not most optimal way to reduce health problems because price is not the most important factor in purchasing a product, and a rise in prices will affect the economic condition.
Firstly, raising the price of sugary food and drinks does not change consumers’ behavior. People buy these products because they are tasty, convenient, and available. Even if prices increase, regular consumers may continue purchasing sugary items and instead reduce spending on healthier food. For example, Coca-Cola has been on the market for over 100 years, and its price increases every year, but no one stops drinking it.
Therefore, higher prices alone are not an effective way to reduce sugar consumption.
Secondly, making sugary products more expensive can negatively affect the economy and certain social groups. Especially low-income families would suffer the most, as they often can only afford cheaper food options. In addition, companies producing sugary items have thousands of workers. A significant fall in demand could result in job losses and lower government tax revenue, which would harm economic stability. Instead of raising prices, governments can implement workshops on the topic of a healthy lifestyle and the importance of switching to healthier, less sugary items.
In conclusion, I disagree that increasing the price of sugary products is the best solution to health problems. Since price is not the main reason people consume sugar and the economic consequences may be serious, governments should focus on education, clear food labeling, and promoting healthier lifestyles instead.
