While sugar-based products are massively introduced by manufacturer, some people believe that high taxes should be considered for sugar foods and drinks to reduce consumption of them. In my opinion, although it is important to make the diet of citizens sugar, free as far as possible, increasing the price tag of these products is not the best option.
It is always taken for granted that the high price of a product, ensure its lack of demand, though it might not be always the case. By making a purchase high price, the access of average-budget households can be dramatically restricted. This means that a producer may see this situation as an opportunity to offer its products as luxurious items. Therefore, by increasing the price of sugary products, tendency for it may rise even more compare to the past. The immediate consequence is an unbalance diet.
However, some people might argue that this is a minor side effect and the majority would have a better health condition. This argument is not compelling, due to the risk that exists in this solution. The risk which was mentioned is that strict the willingness of people, makes them more acquisitive and as a result keener to buy sugar-based food and drinks. There are safer solutions to address this problem. For example, government could develop activities to increasing social awareness about the negative short and long-term impacts of sugar, on health conditions by making documentaries and publishing scientific articles on social media.
In conclusion, while high taxes on sugary foods and drinks to change the unhealthy sugar-based lifestyle of people, might be practical to some extent, I believe, it has remarkable drawbacks and it is better to consider alternative ways, such as increasing social awareness through social media.
