Band 7+: Most of the urgent problems can only be solved with international cooperation. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, it is often argued that most important issues can only be figured out through global collaboration. While I partly agree that partnership between countries can address numerous challenges, I believe that there are still many problems that can only be solved by individual governments.

On the one hand, international cooperation is inevitable because there are many problems that can not be solved within a single country. Issues such as pandemics, global warming and climate change affect the whole world, meaning that a single nation can not figure it out alone with limited resources. For example, in Covid-19 pandemics, every country in the world engaged to prevent the spread of the disease by offering scientists to research internationally. In fact, thanks to support from the US, many vaccine doses were gifted to less developed countries. Without these collaborations, many people could have died due to the spread of the pandemic. Additionally, there are some problems that can only be solved when all countries cooperate. For example, the ban of Freon gases, which severely damaged the ozone layer, could not have been done without the approval of all members of the United Nations. Therefore, international cooperation has proved to be crucial for a better world.

On the other hand, I disagree that global partnership is the only solution to the most urgent crisis. Many pressing challenges are largely domestic problems that can only be addressed by local authorities because of their cost when addressed on a global scale. For instance, infrastructure, facilities and resident well-being should be carried by the local government. If these problems were solved internationally, the trust of people to the local authority could decrease since the government has little or no impact on their well-being. Additionally, problems related to religion and ethnic groups will be more complicated if there were the existence of multiple political entities. For example, the problem of China’s Tibet autonomous zone would be much more complicated if the United States were involved. Even though challenges could be addressed by multiple countries, it could get complicated easily

In conclusion, I partly agree with the approach of global collaboration for solving international problems. Nevertheless, numerous urgent problems could be solved by domestic policies, which means that international cooperation is not the only answer
