Working longer hours is getting more common in today’s society. I personally believe that this trend not only has an impact on workers themselves, but also on their families and the society. Therefore, I totally agree with the idea of limiting working hours.
A few decades ago, people worked an average of 8 hours/day but now it is 10-14 hours/day. This has a detrimental effect on worker’s health. They have to suffer from various health issues such as exhaustion, anxiety disorder, inability to sleep, and even increase the risk of stroke. This leads to increased sick leave and low productivity. My brother, for example, who spends 12 hours on working everyday always feels so tired that makes more errors in the working process. Working overtime has also been linked to an increase in negative habits and reduced positive habits. People, for instance, who work long hours eat unhealthy food more and do exercise less.
Working overtime also has serious consequences for the worker’s family and the society. This trend gives rise to not taking frequent family trips and eating together. Not making time for family leads to family relationships being weakened. In addition, workers do not have enough time for voluntary activities. My brother is a case in point. He is hardly devoted to local charity activities because of his busy working schedule with an average of 60 hours/week.
In conclusion, I would argue that the frequency of working long hours on a daily basis should be restricted because this trend exerts an adverse effect on workers, family bonds and communication.
