Band 9: Pollution and damage to the environment always happen when a country grows and becomes richer, and these problems cannot be stopped. To what degree do you support or oppose this idea?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is often argued that pollution and environmental degradation are inevitable consequences of a country’s economic growth and prosperity. However, I completely disagree with this notion. This is because, with proper policies and the adoption of advanced technologies, environmental problems can be effectively controlled or even prevented.

One key reason why pollution and environmental damage are not inevitable is that sustainable policies can significantly mitigate their impacts. Governments can impose carbon taxes, promote renewable energy, and enforce strict environmental regulations to curb harmful practices. This can be seen in the case of Sweden, which has successfully maintained economic growth while reducing carbon emissions through its extensive use of renewable energy and environmental taxes. Such policies demonstrate that economic development does not necessarily come at the expense of the environment.

In addition, modern technology plays a crucial role in minimizing the environmental impact of economic growth. Innovations such as wastewater treatment plants, clean energy technologies, and smart transportation systems have drastically reduced emissions and pollution in many developed nations. For instance, Japan has invested heavily in green technology, enabling the country to sustain industrial output while significantly lowering levels of industrial pollution. These technological advancements illustrate that environmental protection and economic progress can go hand in hand.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that pollution and environmental degradation are not unavoidable outcomes of economic development. With the implementation of sustainable policies and the use of modern technology, countries can achieve both economic growth and environmental preservation, proving that prosperity does not have to come at the cost of the planet.
