It has been argued that schooling attire should be prohibited, allowing students to freely choose their own clothing. I partly support this viewpoint. This essay will explain my stance by firstly examining how this practice promotes equality among students while mitigate bullying, and secondly, in contrast by discussing how it can be seen as an impediment to the pupils freedom of self-expression and self-identification.
On the one hand, donning a school uniform can foster a sense of equality among students and can significantly diminish the likelihood of bullying occurring. For example, when students dress uniformly, it reduces competition and teasing based on clothing choices, thereby maintaining a more inclusive environment. Bullying is a prevalent issue in schools and can have detrimental effects on young people’s well-being and their academic performances. Educational attire can instill a sense of unity and solidarity, effectively serving as a deterrent to bullies.
On the other hand, students’ individuality and personality can often be expressed through their garment choices. This is particularly true for older students who generally are more recognizable by their apparel. Uniforms, by their very nature, can potentially constrain students from outwardly expressing their unique identities or abilities. Furthermore, this restriction can lead to resentment among students, thus, defeating the purpose of the uniform policy.
In conclusion, while there are certainly noteworthy merits to wearing school uniforms, there are also potential drawbacks that everyone should be aware of. Therefore, I somewhat support the idea that uniforms could be abolished thereby granting students freedom to dress whichever way they desire.
