Nowadays there is a heated discussion weather the digitalisation of education is a positive development. I think that despite a number of disadvantages to this trend, it has an overall positive effect on both students’ level of ground knowledge about the world and their soft skills.
Let me consider some arguments in favour of applying technology in the studying environment. Firstly, it gives students freer and faster access to high quality information, enabling them to search for the necessary data in online libraries of the top world universities. This consequently leads to the increase in the eduction level, giving way to more literate society and well-rounded citizens. Secondly, if students use technology while doing homework or writing course works, they can exchange knowledge and ideas with their peers via social networking platforms or scientific forums, which provides students with variety of ideas and different perspectives along with the opportunity to collaborate with other people around the globe.
Nevertheless, some people hold the opinion that we should not use gadgets in the education process, because it has dire consequences regarding the level of atonomy of students. For example, more and more modern students resort to using Artificial Technology programmes to write their essays and do not bother themselves doing thorough research beforehand. Moreover, plagiarism is on the rise and there is little chance you will encounter a unique piece of writing. These all might prevent the younger generation from developing critical thinking and creativity, which are considered of paramount importance in the contemporary world. The latter is ranked in the top five of qualities valued by employers, according to the statistics.
In conclusion, whereas one could find numerous disadvantages of using technology in education, including the decrease in students’ autonomy and creativity level, I would stick to the opinion that this trend is enhancing people’s overall literacy and soft skills, thus, accelerating the progress of our society and bringing positive change on both individual and national scale.
