In today’s society, due to the advent of the internet, online news is becoming readily available and accessible to people, leading someone to argue that conventional newspaper is not of necessity. While I recognize the merits of e-paper, I am of the opinion that printed papers are never completely replaced.
Admittedly, there are those who contend that internet-based news holds greater merit compared to traditional news. Firstly, digital news offers unprecedented convenience and accessibility. Instead of buying newspapers at a newsstand or reaching post offices to receive them, news readers can gain instant access to information or knowledge through internet-connected devices like smartphones, iPad, or e-readers. As a result, they may save time and efforts. In addition, online news is virtually free-of-charge, allowing people to acquire information without concerns about financial constraints. It is true that nearly every e-paper does not charge readers, which discourage individuals from purchasing conventional papers.
Conversely, I am convinced that the existence of traditional newspapers still hold value for many individuals. Regarding individuals living below poverty line, they are struggling financially to make ends to support their family owing to unemployment or lower incomes. They, hence, fail to afford such a digital device to read news because in order to possess this technological gadget, it may cost them at least thousands of dollars. In terms of people with poor eyesight like the elderly, they have difficulty indulging in information on such digital devices, as words and images are not large enough for them to see. Furthermore, the light from these gadgets also worsens their eyes. These examples serve as a testament to the very role of conventional newspapers in modern society.
In conclusion, regardless of undeniable benefits of internet-connected news, I maintain that printed papers are of paramount importance in our contemporary times, particularly for the poor and the ones with weakened eyesight.
