Band 8+: Some people think rapid population growth in cities only benefits people who live there while others believe that there are disadvantages. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There are various opinions regarding the effects of population expansion in urban areas. Some believe it is entirely positive, while others contend that there may be drawbacks. From my perspective, the rapidly growing population brings both positive and negative effects, with the disadvantages outweighing the advantages.

It cannot be denied that the rapid increase in population in cities has positive influences on the residents. The most obvious benefit of population expansion is the increase in the workforce. With more people receiving training and working in various industries, the economy can be boosted, enhancing societal development as a whole. If population growth were to slow significantly, cities might face workforce shortages, which could be detrimental to the economic system. For instance, countries with low population growth experience serious labor shortages, leading them to implement policies that encourage citizens to have children or attract immigrants from other countries to fill the labor gap.

Despite the advantages of having an adequate workforce that can boost the economy, the drawbacks cannot be overlooked. Firstly, excessively rapid population growth makes the job market much more competitive. The number of positions in the job market tends to remain relatively stable over a given period. If population growth exceeds the number of vacancies, many individuals will struggle to find employment, leading to an increase in the unemployment rate. Secondly, rapid population expansion can place significant pressure on the environment. Specifically, cities can become overcrowded due to the large number of residents. Moreover, an increasing population leads to heightened consumption of energy and natural resources, alongside a rise in pollution.

In summary, while the rapid growth of the population does benefit those already living in cities by providing more workforce and promoting economic growth, its drawbacks outweigh the benefits, as it can lead to excessive pressure on the job market and the environment.
