In recent years, the world has changed significantly, and international news is continuously updated. While some people argue that secondary students should study it as a subject, others believe that it is unnecessary and a waste of school time. In my opinion, students should study global news, but it shouldn’t dominate their schedules.
One of the main reasons proponents advocate for making international news a school subject is that it enhances students’ understanding of the world. When children learn about news from around the globe, they become more informed about political, environmental, and financial issues, as well as other current events. Staying updated on news helps students develop global awareness. For example, learning about world affairs can equip them with knowledge about climate change, which will enable them to make informed decisions regarding their future living conditions. Furthermore, students who study environmental issues become more aware of their severity and the importance of protecting the environment. As a result, they may cultivate a sense of responsibility as citizens.
On the other hand, some argue that teaching international news as a subject would waste valuable school time. They point out that children already have to manage important subjects such as math, physics, and biology, along with a heavy daily curriculum that contributes to their stress. Introducing international news as a subject would not only increase the amount of time students spend at school but also expand their homework load. Moreover, given that news is updated daily, it cannot be effectively taught as a standalone subject. Teachers may struggle to provide accurate materials and prepare lessons, as the information can quickly become outdated. Furthermore, students could use that time to develop essential academic and life skills instead.
In conclusion, while learning about global news can help children expand their knowledge, it is not essential and can be seen as a waste of their time. I believe that teachers should incorporate some elements of international news into their lessons, allowing students to stay informed about world events without dedicating excessive time to the subject.
