Opinions are divided on whether advertising brings significant economic benefits, or whether it causes negative impacts on society, with some people feeling discontented with themselves. While there is a clear advantage for economic growth, I strongly believe that it creates social problems by making individuals feel unhappy with their lives.
On the one hand, advertising plays a crucial role in economic growth. When advertisements are shown on TV or social media, many people become aware of the product, which can increase sales in companies. For instance, when a new smartphone is heavily advertised online, it often sells out in a short period. Besides that, advertising encourages competition among companies; as producers compete to attract more customers to sell their product, they tend to improve the quality and lower prices, which is ultimately beneficial for customers. In a world where many companies are grappling with a lack of customers, advertising makes a big difference when it comes to drawing more people.
On the other hand, some say that it is harmful to the community. Many advertisements present unrealistic images of beauty, luxury, and lifestyles, which can cause viewers to compare themselves negatively. As a result, people, especially teenagers who constantly see perfect models in cosmetic advertisements, may become unsatisfied with their own appearance. Moreover, such marketing can promote materialistic attitudes among young people. Take Central Asian countries like Uzbekistan, where most youngsters feel dissatisfaction with their looks by comparing themselves with beauty models.
In conclusion, although advertising provides significant economic growth, I contend that it makes people feel unhappy with who they are and what they have.
