Band 7+: Some people think that paying taxes is enough to contribute to the society. Others argue that being a citizen involves more responsibilities. Discuss, what is your opinion?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Paying taxes is essential for a country’s development and economic stability. However, some argue that active participation in society is even more crucial than simply paying taxes. This essay will explore both viewpoints and argue that fulfilling broader social responsibilities is as important as, if not more important than, paying taxes

On the one hand, paying taxes is vital for a country’s smooth functioning. Tax revenue is used to support communities during emergencies and natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and cyclones. Paying taxes enables the government to invest in infrastructure projects like roads, hospitals, schools and public spaces. Taxes also play a crucial role in national development. For instance, when government spending is high, tax revenue helps to address budget deficits

On the other hand, broader social responsibilities are essential for creating a thriving society. Building a strong community requires actions beyond simply paying taxes, such as civic engagement, volunteer work, and community service. These activities contribute to a strong sense of social responsibility, which helps to improve the nation. For example, a social worker might plant trees and campaign to raise awareness about the effects of deforestation. This not only raises awareness but also helps to combat climate change. Volunteerism and community service often lead to significant improvements that should not be overlooked when discussing social responsibilities.

In conclusion, while paying taxes is undeniably a mandatory civic duty, engaging in social activities that promote community development should also be prioritised. Therefore, I believe that we should place greater emphasis on fulfilling our broader social responsibilities, rather than solely focusing on paying taxes
