In the contemporary world, the effective form of communication has become a topic of debate. Many people hold the view that face-to-face interaction exerts more power than oral communication. In my opinion, I partially agree with that viewpoint and this essay will elucidate my perspective.
On the one hand, many people, including me, agree that spoken communication dramatically affects listeners’ intention due to its direct and social interaction. Firstly, when being immersed in a verbal conversation, one can clearly sense others’ mindsets and their educational levels, which leads to the connection between like-minded people, thus enhancing the overall efficiency of the conversation. For example, when students struggle with their piles of homework, direct communication with their teachers can cultivate a sense of sympathy in those students rather than a mundane letter. Furthermore, social interaction including determinants like facial expressions or behavioral traits is seemingly works better in urgent situation.
On the other hand, despite the aforementioned outstanding features of verbal communication, oral communication still has many advantages such as: comprehensive reflection and versatile usage. Firstly, interacting with others through paper-based communication can assist people to attach more images or quotations, thus comprehensively transferring the communicators’ messages. Moreover, indirect communication can pave the way for additional reflection time for people to deeply consider their intended message, which might mitigate impulsive speech ruining the conversation. For example, the relationship between people can be long-lasting if they are connected through letter correspondence as they hardly have fallouts.
In conclusion, while verbal communication might be appropriate in specific cases due to its direct and social nature, oral communication should not be underestimated as it can provide communicators with effective communication and flexible utilization.
