Band 8+: The population of many cities is growing rapidly. What are the effects on people living in these cities? What can be done to maintain the quality of life of these people?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The urban area population has been experiencing rapid growth over the years. As a result, it has caused a wide range of effects on the citizens residing in these areas. However, various steps can be taken to sustain these citizen’s standards of living.

One major effect of population growth in cities is the rise in unemployment rates. As many individuals begin migrating to urban cities with the hope of finding high-paying jobs, the job market will become more competitive, causing more people to be unemployed. For instance, certain companies, after hiring more employees, will be more inclined to sack more people due to not having enough money to sustain their wages, further reducing the rate of employment in cities. Additionally, air pollution is another problem caused by overpopulation in cities, caused by excessive exhaust from automobiles in traffic. An example can be seen in cities like Delhi, where air quality degrades as more vehicles are on the street due to rising population density, negatively impacting residents’ health.

To maintain the quality of life against these challenges, one effective measure that can be taken is that governments can allocate more of their budget toward funding businesses and industries to assist them in paying their workers better, as well as providing more job opportunities for citizens. For example, European countries like Sweden and Finland have successfully lowered their unemployment rate over the past couple of years, as a result of utilizing a larger portion of their tax funds to provide more money for companies and businesses, allowing them to hire more people. Furthermore, congestion charges can be implemented by local authorities to prevent traffic jams and reduce the number of vehicles on the road, thereby improving the air quality in urban areas. One instance is in the city of London, where congestion charging has been put into action recently, which has tremendously helped in reducing air pollution.

In conclusion, the population of many cities is growing at a rapid rate, causing issues like unemployment and poverty for its people. However, measures can still be taken to maintain the quality of life of these people, such as better utilization of funding from the government and authorities, and implementation of traffic penalties.
