Band 6+: Today people are surrounded by advertising. This affects what people think is important and has a negative impact on people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Over the past decade, with the emergency of technological advancements, societies are bombarded by millions of advertisements. It is reckoned by people that the ubiquity of advertisement is distorting people’s perception on what is crucial in life and this phenomenon present several detrimental effects. From my perspective, I strongly agree this assertion and the reasons will be noticed in this essay.

Obviously, the large number of television commercials influence on the perceptions of importance. Firstly, it makes the younger generation more superficial and only interested in owning what is considered popular. For instance, many teenagers today might feel pressured to have the latest smartphone models, designer clothing, and trendy accessories in order to fit in and gain social approval, often at the expense of saving money for education or experiences that truly enrich their lives. Additionally, advertisements set and reinforce societal norms and standards, particularly regarding beauty, success, and lifestyle. This can shape people’s perceptions of what is desirable and important, often creating unrealistic and unattainable ideals.

It is undeniable that advertising is a negative part of our lives. One problem is that advertisers have diverted advertisement towards children because they are easy to manipulate. Many fast food chains use cartoon characters to attract teenagers; thus, youngsters force their parents to buy those products which are not suitable for health. Moreover, even adults are encouraged by these ads to buy and own more stuff than needed, leading to financial strain. A recent study by New York Times found that advertisements often employ sophisticated psychological techniques to create a sense of urgency or desire, this can persuade adults to make unnecessary purchases, resulting in overspending and financial instability.

In conclusion, I believe that the pervasive influence of advertising undeniably distorts our perception of what is important and has a harmful consequence on the quality of our lives. It not only has serve effects on children’s health but also brings about financial pressures. The governments should encourage and support advertisements that promote positive social values, such as sustainability and health
