In recent decades, the need to master foreign languages has become a lower priority due to the advancement of innovation. While translating another language is convenient and time-efficient, I firmly believe that people should not depend completely on computers or smartphones. This essay will explain the importance of learning another laguage and why I disagree with this view.
First and foremost, learning a foreing language enhances an individual’s cognitive skills. To illustrate, study reports have proved that mastering a different language in early ages allows children to process incoming information and apply knowledge to daily tasks faster than monolingual students. Additionally, it offers greater career opportunities for multilingual individuals. For instance, there is a high demand for skillful diplomats from a wide range of international corporations.
Moreover, using a smartphone to translate dialogues or other messages is sometimes considered unethical in certain nations. For example, countries such as Italy, France, and Japan have a well-respected culture; therefore, learning even basic phrases might show some respect to the locals. Furthermore, specialize in a foreign language is crucial for people who are planning to move abroad for employment or higher studies. For instance, if a Sri Lankan student is unable to understand or communicate with Japanese classmates, he might feel isolated, encounter difficulties regarding assignments, projects, and presentations. This could lead to long-term emotional conditions such as depression.
In conclusion, although it is convenient to use translation apps, I strongly believe that mastering other languages is essential, not only does it offers career opportunities, but it is also a greate skill that could enhance one’s overall lifestyle.
