The advent of the internet has revolutionized the way we consume news, with social media platforms becoming the primary source for many. Although there is a negative side to this, this essay will argue that the positive aspects outweigh the primary disadvantage as news on social media is very convenient and accessible to people and it also affects the level of understanding of global issues among people.

One of the most significant advantages of social media as a news source is its accessibility and convenience. Users can access news updates instantly on their devices, eliminating the need for traditional media outlets. For instance, more than half (53%) of American people said they frequently acquire their news from social media, according to a 2021 Pew Research Centre research, underscoring the platform’s ease of use and accessibility as a main news source. Moreover, social media has the potential to enhance global understanding. By connecting people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, these platforms make it easier for people to share their thoughts and viewpoints on global topics.For example , according to a 2020 Reuters Institute survey, 43% of social media users believe they are more educated about global issues than the traditional media because they have access to a diverse variety of opinions and real-time information.

The lack of verification of facts that is common on social media sites is a huge problem. Misinformation and disinformation may grow because of the rapid spread of information and the lack of strict editing controls. False information has the ability to spread quickly affecting decision-making and public opinion. For example, according to a 2020 Reuters Institute survey, just 23% of participants were confident in the accuracy of the news they consume, while 59% of them said they had come across incorrect data on social media.

In conclusion , the advantages of greater accessibility, convenience, and global understanding much outweigh the disadvantages, even while the difficulties caused by the spread of false information on social media cannot be ignored.
