Some people argue that all criminals are meant to serve in their senteces in prison, while others believe that those, who committed a minor crime, should receive an alternative type of punishment. I am going to discuss both of the view points and give my personal opinion.
First of all, it must be considered that prisons are meant to be correctional. These institutions are meant to teach those, liable for committing crimes, responsibility and lock up those, who are still dangerous to society. Therefore, a prison sentence is not about the lawbraker feeling devastated by not living properly, but about the protection of the whole society. Nevertheless, it is still important to consider the downsides of such instituions. For example, constant fights between the prisoners, resulting in inhuman abuse, life-threatening injuries or killings. Additionally, the conditions in such institutions are mostly terrible and insanitary, leading to illnesses that are not being treated properly. The question than is: who deserves such a punishment?
The other side suggests offering a different type of punishment for those whose crimes are minor. On the one hand, community work increases country’s or city’s well-being, as well as puts less pressure and danger on those serving the sentence. Also, placing shoplifters alongside serial killers may seems unfair as the crimes are not alike. At the same time, this decision might cause a wave of protests among the families of those, serving the sentences in prisons. This, if left without a proper regulation, can result in serious affects for the government.
From my perspective, putting everybody to prison is a bad decision. Every lawbreaker must be assessed fairly and, according to my beliefs, it does not include send every criminal to prison.
To sum up, both of the view points have their advantages and downsides, which were clearly underlined in the essays. Hence, the opinion should be made by accounting all of the mentioned information.
