Band 8+: Some people think paying taxes is a big enough contribution to society, while others think people have more responsibilities as members of society than only paying taxes. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, the role of individuals as contributors to their community is a subject of debate. Whilst some argue that paying taxes constitutes a significant contribution, others believe that citizens have broader responsibilities beyond financial obligations. This essay will closely examine both perspectives before presenting my viewpoint.

On the one hand, advocates of the belief that paying taxes is a significant contribution assert that taxation serves as the crucial contribution which individuals support their society. Tax revenues play a pivotal role in financing essential public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. Without the financial infusion from taxes, governments would encounter challenges in delivering these crucial services, potentially resulting in a deterioration of social well-being. Additionally, paying taxes is a legal obligation enforced by governments, and meeting this obligation is perceived as fulfilling one’s role as a law-abiding citizen.

Nonetheless, there is a compelling assertion that individuals should have broader responsibilities beyond tax payments. Members of society are interconnected and interdependent, and as a consequence, they have a moral mandate to contribute to the welfare of their community through various ways. This contribution may involve volunteering, partaking in community projects, or simply embodying responsible and law-abiding behavior. Apart from financial contributions, active involvement and social responsibility cultivate a sense of unity and solidarity within society, fostering a more cohesive and flourishing community.

In my opinion, whilst paying taxes undoubtedly represents a crucial facet of social contribution, it alone is insufficient. Citizens have a moral responsibility to actively engage in endeavors that advance the common good and elevate the quality of life for all members of society. By participating in community initiatives and upholding ethical values, individuals can have a more active and impactful role in shaping a better society for future generations.
