There are many facets to an ubiquitous element like the media that pervades our society. With its proliferation, and thus the increasing violence that is primarily depicted in videogames and movies, some people are correlating increasing juvenile crimes to it. I am of the opinion that correlation does not mean causation, and am expanding my ideas in further paragraphs.
As of yet, no empirical evidence provides a base to blame violence in the media for increasing crime rates in early youths. In fact, one theory says it to be a case of confirmation bias, where while the crime rate is the same as ever, its reporting and subsequent documentation has instead increased in the digital era. Another theory points to the ostentatious displays of lifestyles on the social media, which creates dissatisfaction due to comparison in teenagers.
Yet another reason is the absenteeism of parents due to the increasingly hectic work schedule of modern society. The corollary is the unsupervised and unmoderated growth of these children in presence of their devices. These reasons are also leading to increased isolation from society and is even reflected in adults in increasing rates of depression. Releasing frustration in games has shown to be cathartic, and even conforms to the contemporary philosophy of not keeping feelings bottled up.
To conclude, the violence and brutality in media can not be blamed per se. Rather, it is the combination of multiple factors, practices, and active life styles choices that has led to increasing violence in adolescents.
