Band 9: Research has shown that the transportation of products and people is the main source of pollution. Some people believe the government should be in charge of this, while others believe that it is the fault of individuals. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s complex world, the question of whether mitigating transportation-related pollution should be the responsibility of governments or individuals has sparked considerable debate. While some individuals advocate for systemic policy interventions by the state, others argue that meaningful progress depends on conscious lifestyle changes by ordinary people. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own reasoned viewpoint in favor of a government-led strategy, supported by civic participation.

Those who support government involvement often argue that only the state has the authority and resources to enforce large-scale change. For instance, governments can impose strict emission regulations, invest in public transport infrastructure, and subsidize green technologies. This top-down approach ensures uniform standards and wider impact, which individual actions cannot always guarantee. From this perspective, public policy is seen as the cornerstone of long-term environmental reform.

Conversely, proponents of individual responsibility emphasize the power of collective behavior. They argue that people can reduce their carbon footprint by choosing eco-friendly transport, avoiding unnecessary travel, or supporting local goods to minimize freight emissions. Without personal accountability, even the strongest policies may fall short. Hence, this view maintains that sustainable habits are just as crucial as regulatory frameworks.

Personally, I align with the belief that while personal actions matter, government leadership is indispensable. Laws, incentives, and national goals are needed to create structural change, but these must be paired with public cooperation. In an interconnected society, environmental progress requires both institutional frameworks and widespread behavioral shifts.

Ultimately, although both views offer valid insights, I firmly believe that a combined approach—government action backed by individual responsibility—provides the most effective and sustainable solution to pollution caused by transportation
