It is widely asserted that human life on the Earth is becoming harder over time due to the dramatic growth in world population and resource depletion. While I agree that life on Earth is unsustainable, I challenge the idea that funding space exploration in search of new inhabitable planets is unreasonable and suggest that money should be allocated to raise people’s living standards on Earth instead.
On the one hand, many individuals claim that our planet Earth has become unfit for human habitation owing to the scarcity of resources and escalation of environmental problems. First, the level of environmental pollution has been exacerbated by human activities worldwide, adversely affecting the ecosystem. Second, the rising consumption of natural resources such as gas, oil, and coal has released a significant amount of carbon emission which leads to drastic climate changes and impairs the air quality. For example, a research conducted by the University of Michigan in 2010 discovered severe symptoms of respiratory diseases in the urbanites living in metropolitan cities, as well as land shrinks due to the sea level rise. All things considered, human life is now under threat.
On the other hand, I would posit that investing an invaluable budget on finding another inhabitable planet is not an effective measure as funding for mitigation of environmental issues is a more viable solution. In particular, seeking another planet with favourable conditions is not a profound panacea, because it requires a lengthy tie, arduous efforts, and professional human resources. In contrast, investing in education for an environmentally friendly lifestyle is feasible. For instance, the government should implement a program to educate people to use alternative energy resources such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric power rather than reliance on fossil fuels in the transportation and business industry. Consequently, those actions would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and hinder global warming, resulting in the Earth being a more desirable place to live for all the creatures on this planet.
In conclusion, although survival on the Earth seems more challenging, I strongly believe that financial resources should be allocated for sustainability of the Earth instead of chasing down other planets for relocation.
