Some individuals contend that the main purpose of education is tohelp people be useful to society. Others, however, believe that they can benefit from education to accomplish their own goals. In this essay, I would evaluate both schools of thought before proposing my own perspective.
On the one hand, there are compelling reasons why education mainly helps people prepare to pursue their dreams. Firstly, fundamental skills will be taught so that each person has his or her own knowledge, which should be the very first foundation for them. Secondly, individual ambitions might also be helpful for the society. For instance, a student who dreams of becoming an artist or entrepreneur needs an education system that supports creativity and independent thinking, not only academic knowledge. When people are encouraged to pursue their goals, they are often more motivated to learn and work hard.
On the other hand, education plays a vital role in creating a useful workforce for society. Schools and universities teach basic knowledge, skills, and discipline that help students become responsible citizens. For example, subjects such as science, mathematics, and civic education prepare students for future jobs and help them understand their duties in society. Without education, it would be difficult for a country to develop economically or maintain social order. Therefore, educating individuals to be useful members of society is an important goal.
In my opinion, although education should benefit society, helping individuals achieve personal ambitions is more important. When people are able to do what they are passionate about, they tend to perform better and contribute more effectively to society. As a result, personal success often leads to social development.
In conclusion, education has the purpose of both preparing people to serve society and helping them achieve their personal goals. However, I believe that focusing on individual ambitions can ultimately bring greater benefits to society as a whole.
