Band 7+: In many countries, children are becoming overweight and unhealthy. Some people think that the government has the responsibility to solve this problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is argued that the government should take the responsibility in addressing social problems such as childhood obesity. From my perspective, while the government can play an important role in protecting children’s well-being, the impact of parental guidance is also greatly significant and could not be overshadowed.

On the one hand, it is apparent that the government can hold the responsibility in ensuring the well-being of its people, particularly addressing childhood obesity. They have the high authority to strictly control and regulate unhealthy food, including high-fat and cholesterol-rich meals that lack essential nutrients such as fiber. For example, they can establish some educational and propagation programs to enhance people’s awareness regarding health risks associated with obesity, such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Furthermore, through such campaigns, the government can also highlight the tremendous benefits of a healthy lifestyle as well as balanced diets that foster children to develop healthy habits from an early age. In addition, they can also propose school-related policies, for example, by requiring schools to include regular physical education activities in learning programs or offer high-nutrition meals to kids.

On the other hand, parents are the ones to have a more direct and influential impact on children’s everyday behaviors. They can easily control and adjust their children’s diet at home by choosing healthier food options and limiting the consumption of sugary snacks and drinks. Moreover, parents can also curtail children’s excessive screen time with phones, TV, and video games and encourage them to play sports or engage in outdoor activities. By doing so, parents can help their kids to avoid the risk of having a sedentary lifestyle, which is a major cause of obesity.

In conclusion, while it is undeniable that government involvement can be positive in tackling childhood health issues, parental support and engagement also hold a greatly important role in dealing with this societal problem.
