Band 8+: Some people think that children should learn a foreign language at primary school. Others believe it is better to wait until secondary school. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There is an ongoing debate about whether students should learn a foreign language at primary school or secondary school. Some people believe that children should start learning a new language at primary school because of greater adaptability, while others maintain that they should begin at secondary school due to stronger learning capability. From my perspective, I strongly advocate that young people should start learning a foreign language at primary school.

Those who believe that students should start acquiring a new language at middle school base their argument mainly on the importance of reducing stress. They think that placing an extra course on pupils would lead to more study-related pressure, which would negatively affect young people’s mental well-being. Under these circumstances, pupils who tend to dislike studying are more likely to disengage from higher education. Additionally, the most appropriate time for studying a new language would be at secondary school, especially for those who have certain learning abilities and time management skills. Hence, allowing pupils to focus on core subjects first would be more beneficial to their overall development. One significant reason why students should learn a foreign language at primary school is that it will promote their personal growth. To be more specific, primary school lasts six years, which allows pupils to have a relatively relaxed learning environment. Students will have enough time to accumulate knowledge at a slower pace compared to fast-paced middle school studies. Moreover, it is widely believed that pupils’ brains are more flexible which can absorb grammar patterns and pronunciation quickly. Leveraging this advantage, young people can gain a sense of achievement by mastering a foreign language, which would encourage them in their future studies and help them achieve greater academic success.

As I have demonstrated above, I firmly believe that children should start studying a foreign language at primary school. Although secondary students have stronger learning abilities for a new language, the heavier workload may be a barrier to an effective learning outcome. Therefore, learning a foreign language from primary school will not only establish a solid foundation but also boost personal development.
