The impact of globalisation can not be unnoticed, as it has affected many aspects of human life, including fashion. People are now wearing Western clothes, such as suits and jeans, instead of traditional attire, a phenomenon that is largely positive, in my opinion.
One negative effect of adopting Western styles has to do with cultural loss. When individuals only wear clothes that are associated with foreign nations and stop celebrating their own traditional clothing, this runs a risk of eroding cultural values and beliefs. Since garments are one of the few tangible parts of nations’ identity and culture, people’s decision not to put on their traditional clothing can undermine cultural and national identity. In a world where nations are struggling to stand out from neighboring countries, the unwillingness of wearing traditional attire by individuals makes the challenge even harder. In addition, some Western clothes for females are notorious for being short and revealing, which is not only culturally inappropriate, but it also breeds negative qualities among young individuals, like degeneracy and promiscuity.
These arguments notwithstanding, I still contend that the influence of Western clothing styles is favourable. The main attraction of these garments is their comfort and quality. Unlike some traditional clothes, which are heavy and impractical, especially for students and office workers who spend a considerable amount of time indoors, suits and jeans are made with modern techniques and fabrics, such as nylon and other synthetic materials, which improve the flexibility and insulation of the clothing. These features are critical to sit and work for a long period of time without sweating and irritation. Take traditional attire in my home county — “Chopon”, clothing that is designed for men. It is made of cotton and covers the whole body, limiting mobility and heating the wearer. This means that the replacement of such clothes by modern and more convenient Western styles can provide people with comfort.
In conclusion, while clothing styles coming from the West can harm local cultures and promote some negative qualities among young people, I maintain that Western garments are superior in terms of their comfort and quality, making them ideal for modern workplaces and educational institutions. To maximize the benefits, governments can organize special holidays when only traditional clothes are worn, and explicit attire should be prevented from being put on by the means of social order.
