In the modern world, television can positively influence children’s cognitive abilities by making education effective and fun. Due to this fact, some people believe that since children can learn by watching TV, they should watch it more frequently, even in education facilities. However, I personally believe that this approach have some considerable disadvantages and this essay will explain the negative impact of it.
First of all, one of the main reasons why encouraging children to watch television is a bad idea is because of risks of problems with health and performance. Besides positive effects, TV have a lot of negative sides, especially for young people. First of all, excessive watching TV can lead to vision issues, since ultraviolet from TV screens negatively affect people’s eyes. Therefore, if children watch TV every day even at schools, their vision will deteriorate over time. Moreover, the majority of TV programs are designed to capture people’s attention as long as it possible, and particularly children are tend to spend a lot of time watching channels. This can make them addicted to watching TV and rather than learning something new or useful they might begin constantly watching programs without any purpose. This tendency will make them lazy and worsen their school performance. For example, they can loose motivation to learn and cease doing their homework, because in comparison with entertainment from TV, studying will be seemed as something boring and tedious.
Secondly, even education programs on TV cannot substitute real lessons from teachers, since such programs do not provide comprehensive and deep explanation of subjects and mostly aimed to just entertain a viewer. As a result, children will have lack of knowledge about important subjects, which in turn will affect their future careers and hinder attending a university. Therefore, regular watching TV is not an effective method to learn complex information at school.
In conclusion, although some people believe that children should be encouraged to watch TV in both homes and schools, I personally believe that this approach will lead to degrading of pupils’ abilities to study and perform in the future. Instead, I think that schools should make education clear and beneficial, and encourage children to be more active and motivate them to learn.
