Band 7+: The increase in food production is mostly due to fertilisers and better machinery. Yet, some think that it harms human health and communities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, the amount of food produced around the world has increased significantly because of modern fertilisers and better farming machinery. These developments have helped farmers produce more crops in shorter period of time. However, many people argue that this way of farming has negative effects on people’s health and local communities. I mostly agree with this opinion because although these technologies have many advantages, they also create serious problems.

On the one hand, there is no doubt that fertilisers and modern machines have changed agriculture in positive way. Farmers are able to grow much more food than in the past, which is very important because the world’s population is increasing every year. Without these developments, many countries may face food shortages. In addition, farming machines make many tasks easier and faster. For example, tractors and harvesting machines can finish work in few hours that would take several days if people did it by hand. This not only saves time but also increase farmers’ income because they can produce more crops.

On the other hand, overusing chemical fertilisers can cause serious health and environmental problems. Some harmful chemicals may stay in vegetables and fruits, and people who eat them for many years might develop health issues. Also, these chemicals can pollute rivers and underground water, which affects both humans and animals. Another disadvantage is that modern machinery reduce the number of workers needed on farms. As a result, many people in rural communities lose their jobs and it becomes difficult for them to earn enough money. This can also make young people leave villages to find work in cities, which weakens local communities.

In my opinion, governments should not stop using modern technology in agriculture because it is necessary to feed growing population. Instead, they should control the use of chemical fertilisers more carefully and encourage farmers to use natural alternatives whenever possible. They should also provide support for workers who lose their jobs because of new machines.

In conclusion, I believe that modern fertilisers and better machinery have helped increase food production, but they also brings several negative consequences for human health and communities. Therefore, these technologies should be used in more responsible way so that people can enjoy their benefits without suffering from their harmful effects.
