In today’s rapidly evolving world, people often find themselves swarmed with work and can hardly find a healthy work-life balance. This causes some individuals to think that if mankind could choose between spending the majority of their lives at work or living a life free from work, people could choose a life devoid of labor. For some people, they would probably disagree with this view; however, I am inclined with the opinion.
Admittedly, it is understandable why some individuals value their careers and choose to work extensively. The primary reason is that humans have an inborn competitive nature that forces them to work more and more to accumulate wealth, even if that money is far too enough to make ends meet. Those people often showcase their affluence through luxury lifestyles such as luxurious items, real estate, or their assets on stock exchange platforms. Only by working diligently, did they have enough money for these showcases. Another notable contributor is that some individuals pursue careers as a way to professional satisfaction and find a sense of purpose. A clear example is Elon Musk, one of the wealthiest men in the entire world. While amassing an excessive amount of money, far enough for any needs, he is still ambitious about developing space exploration technologies and environmentally friendly vehicles, wanting the fruits from these projects to serve humanity.
However, the aforementioned line of reasoning is only sound for a minority part of mankind, while I think the rest would choose not to work if they had a chance. Many workers claim that a nine-to-five workweek is a constraint to self-freedom as it often comes with exhausting deadlines and tough managers, not to mention overtime work. The choice to retire can be easily seen in the rising movement of early retirement or the demand for work-life balance in the youth today in order to escape from burdensome responsibilities. Moreover, throughout a person’s life, there are many personal milestones different from work, and working is only the way to gain money for these ambitions. To elaborate, with sufficient financial safety net, those individuals are willing to retire early to spend their time pursuing other goals such as personal interests or taking care of their families. Those goals would possibly bring them diverse perspectives and lead to a more fulfilling life.
In conclusion, while work is important for some, many people would prefer a life free from its demands to focus on personal goals and well-being. The desire for work-life balance highlights the value of a fulfilling life beyond work.
