In the evolving media world, film industry is a booming business. Film industries around that world look up to US film industry for it’s expensive production and well thought plots.
Film industry being main stream media in modern society make it capable of circulating and developing various art forms and cultural ideas around the globe. This is the reason, why allocation of resources for local film industries of the country is necessary for the governments. Subsidizing film industry can help them produce more high quality content. Government funding and increased infrastructure can promise porducers and directors certain gains on their projects. This can allow them to explore out of the box areas and make more culture oriented art films. Moreover, investments into censor boards can be a another step. Improved censor boards can monitor film production and final cuts, to make sure films go in direction to protect and develop country’s culture.
On the other hand, spending country’s finances on film industry can drain the vaults and impact economy. Spending on innovative education infrastructure rather than subisidising films can be more effective. Educated public will be more aware of the cultural values and feel responsible of protecting their inheritnace. Moreover, there can be other local artforms that can be aided by government. Some local artforms like paintng exhibitions or street acts can preserve local culture well and should be supported instead of big scale films.
In light of above arguments, it is evident that government investing into film industry can have both benefits and drawbacks. However, I believe governments should not interfere with the finances of the film industry. Their involvement will not only restrict gesture of free speech in films, but also be unfair for some other local artforms.
