In many countries, the duration of primary and secondary school holidays has been a subject of debate with the arguments either in favour of longer holidays or shorter ones. In fact, both long school holidays and shorter breaks are essential for primary and secondary school children, as each type of holiday offers its own unique advantages.
To begin with the benefits of long holidays, almost all students eagerly anticipate enjoying extended vacations after a long academic year. During these breaks, they can spend quality time with family and friends while schools are closed. Long holidays serve as a period for students to recharge after a demanding schedule filled with studies, homework, and school projects. Not only can they refresh themselves, but they also have opportunities to encounter new and exciting experiences by participating in international cultural exchange programs during long holidays. Sometimes, they even make new friends from different parts of the world. Furthermore, parents and children can utilize this time to bond and create lasting memories together. Additionally, these extended breaks allow students to engage in activities that align with their hobbies or to learn new skills, such as foreign languages or musical instruments, in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
In contrast, advocates for shorter school holidays argue that they can help prevent students from feeling demotivated or reluctant to return to school after a lengthy break. With longer vacations, some students may forget what they have learned, making it challenging for teachers to reintegrate them into academic life, which could require considerable time and effort. In this context, shorter holidays can be advantageous as they allow students consistent learning process while taking enjoyable breaks without the drawbacks associated with longer vacations.
In conclusion, both extended and abbreviated holidays hold substantial value. From my perspective, primary and secondary students should be granted the opportunity to enjoy an extended holiday at least once a year, complemented by shorter breaks throughout the academic calendar. This approach can optimize students’ learning experiences and overall well – being.
