In this day and age, the frequency of communication between younger individuals and older ones has decreased compared to the past. In this essay, I will explore the reasons behind this development before proposing solutions that can alleviate its implications.
There are some reasons that explain why younger individuals tend to communicate less with older ones. Although the generation gap has always posed barriers when it comes to communication between younger and older generations, this issue has worsened over time. Due to the differences in beliefs and mindsets, along with the advancement of technology, most young individuals tend to adapt to these contemporary changes more easily, whereas older ones find it hard to embrace this new lease of life. As a result, young people often struggle to share common ground with their elders, leading to a decline in communication between both generations. To be more specific, while gender equality is often supported by the young generation who hold more liberal beliefs and open mindsets toward societal issues, the opposite is true for the older ones since many of them may prefer stereotypes and conservative thoughts. Consequently, due to this contrast in beliefs, most young individuals avoid engaging in conversations with older ones, thus forming a reduction in communication between both generations over time. Moreover, the hectic lifestyle could be a factor that weakens the frequency of communication between young individuals and older ones. With the pressure of academics, career building, and social commitments, many young people may struggle to find time and energy to engage in conversations with older people. This mismatch in lifestyle dynamics could exacerbate and weaken the connection between both generations.
However, there are still many effective ways to bridge the communication gap between younger and older generations. As for young individuals, they should strive to balance their work demands and personal lives to dedicate quality time and connect with older people, including their parents or grandparents. This can be efficiently achieved through tentative actions such as learning about their family roots, and traditions or discussing shared interests like education, career aspirations, or even personal goals. These seemingly small actions not only foster stronger bonds but also contribute to building deeper connections between both generations, On the other hand, older people can play a crucial role in strengthening this connection by attentively listening to the younger one, making an effort to understand their personalities and preferences as well as wholeheartedly supporting their decisions with constructive feedbacks rather than harsh judgments. Recent studies have shown that communication is highly successful when individuals are willing to understand each other’s backgrounds, preferences, and tendencies.
In conclusion, while many youngsters are currently struggling to communicate with seniors, these challenges can be effectively addressed through thoughtful actions. From my perspective, I highly recommend both generations should make efforts and embrace each other’s differences as well as respect and support them in every aspect of life. By doing these steps, both young and older individuals can overcome barriers in communication and form closer connections and healthy relationships over time.
