It is commonly true that the advancement of technology has contributed largely to people’s lives, and there have been some predictions indicating that these technological advancements have resulted in people in this modern era having more free time compared to in the past. While I agree that significant amounts of time could be saved thanks to the application of some useful technological devices, I would also argue that these improvements do not necessarily bring about more free time for many individuals due to a variety of reasons.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that technological innovations have helped reduce significant amounts of time people have to spend on some manual work. Typical daily household chores such as cleaning the floor, doing the laundry, or washing the dishes can now be done simply through some initial settings without the need for human intervention during the process, which can help save hours on a daily basis. Also, technological developments help facilitate the connectivity between individuals in the 21st century, making it possible now to share information and resources without the need for a physical setting like a work office, or actual commute to get the work done. This means individuals could save considerable amounts of time on commuting, and instead this time could be spent on other personal purposes.
On the other hand, I would say this prediction might not be true in the respect that individuals have more free time now than in the past. To begin, the constantly changing nature of technology might often lead to confusion while operating among a certain number of users, and not all of these labor-saving devices come with reasonable prices that a typical household could afford. Therefore, these types of advancement could not guarantee a decreased amount of time spent on daily chores among all members of society. Additionally, a reduced amount of time spent on commuting thanks to modern technological equipment does not always transfer into increased leisure time, but instead might result in additional workload and extra tasks which are assigned by employers or managers due to the easy connection outside the work context, which might even lessen the amount of personal time available among these individuals compared to in the past.
In conclusion, while it is true that some technological improvements have contributed greatly to reducing the amount of time allocated for certain manual tasks, I think the prediction that these advancements could bring about more free time might not be true for every individual in this modern time.
