Band 8+: Many criminals re-offend after they have been punished. Why do some people continue to commit crimes after they have been punished, and what measures can be taken to tackle this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, a significant proportion of former offenders tend to re-offend following their punishment, sparking concerns among the public. It is imperative that immediate actions are taken to address this issue, as the overall well-being of the community is at stake.

First and foremost, it is crucial to explore the underlying reasons why individuals persist in criminal behavior even after facing legal consequences. Primarily, engaging in illicit activities may be perceived as the only means of survival for some ex-convicts. Upon their release, many offenders find themselves lacking basic necessities such as shelter, food, and familial support. For instance, a substantial number of burglars admit that they resort to theft due to the absence of viable alternatives for sustenance. Furthermore, the inclination to demonstrate prowess or gain recognition can also drive individuals towards criminal acts. A notable example is depicted in the novel ‘A Clockwork Orange’, where a group of young delinquents commits various offenses in a bid to appear impressive. Notably, some of these individuals may not harbor malicious intentions but are swayed by the desire to integrate into certain social circles.

Furthermore, it is evident that governments bear the responsibility of implementing proactive measures to deter recidivism. Establishing re-education facilities could prove to be instrumental in facilitating the rehabilitation process for former criminals post-incarceration. These institutions could offer a conducive environment for individuals to explore new interests, develop skills, and acquire knowledge on lawful means of earning a livelihood. Given the challenges ex-convicts often encounter upon re-entering society, providing them with essential resources such as accommodation, vocational training, and sustenance can significantly contribute to their reintegration. Moreover, initiatives that bridge the gap between employers and individuals with criminal backgrounds can play a pivotal role in reducing the likelihood of relapse into criminal behavior.

In conclusion, it is evident that numerous individuals grapple with multifaceted challenges that propel them towards criminality. To address this issue, it is imperative that proactive steps are taken to extend support to these individuals and mitigate the factors driving them towards recidivism.
