Band 8+: Nowadays most green energy is becoming evermore prevalent in both developed and developing countries. Some argue they greatly reduce costs and are better for the environment, others believe they are a serious threat to energy security. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Nowadays, the utilization of renewable energy has become increasingly widespread in both developed and developing nations. Some contend that it significantly reduces costs and is more environmentally friendly, while others argue that it poses a serious risk to energy security. This essay will critically evaluate both perspectives, and in my view, I firmly support the adoption of renewable energy sources.

Critics of renewable energy posit that its full-scale implementation could potentially lead to disruptions in the power supply. This is primarily due to the reliance of many green energy technologies on variable and unpredictable factors such as wind, precipitation, and cloud cover. For instance, solar panels, which are a rapidly expanding sector, require strong and direct sunlight for optimal functionality. Even though the issue of directness has been partly addressed through the use of movable panel arrays, prolonged cloudy weather could still result in power outages if we were solely reliant on solar energy. However, it is worth noting that the current abundance of oil reserves makes the occurrence of such a blackout highly improbable.

Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that fossil fuels pose a more significant threat to energy security, as they are undeniably finite in quantity. In contrast, renewable energy is virtually limitless; once the Earth’s oil reserves are depleted, energy security will only be sustainable through the adoption of green energy technologies. Furthermore, the potential challenges associated with unpredictability can be mitigated through advancements in battery technologies to create larger energy reserves, the construction of more renewable energy generators to bolster supply during optimal conditions, and the enhancement of existing technologies to improve efficiency, as demonstrated in the case of moving solar panels. Proponents of renewable energy argue that these measures render it the most financially viable option.

In conclusion, while some contend that green energy technologies pose a threat to energy security, the greater peril lies in the reliance on fossil fuels. Therefore, I am of the opinion that renewable energy is the only sustainable option, both economically and environmentally.
