Communication among families and friends has increasingly shifted toward social media platforms in recent years. The reasons for this development will be examined in this essay. Moreover, in my view, this trend seems to have more negative effects than positive ones.
One reason for this transformation is that communicating through social media is more affordable. Financially speaking, a phone call is significantly less expensive than a flight ticket. Similarly, it is also cheaper than the fuel costs for cars or motorcycles, which reduces the cost of staying in touch. Another explanation for this trend is that online communication can be time-saving. Instead of driving for several minutes to talk with someone face-to-face, people can simply send/exchanges messages instantly. Furthermore, online posts can not only deliver messages to one person but also share updates with many people at the same time. Because of these practical benefits, social media has become a popular means of communication in modern life.
Despite these benefits, I believe that this development more drawbacks/negative consequences than benefits. Chief among these concerns is a lack of privacy. People/Users often share their sensitive personal information on online platforms without realising that strangers can access and misuse it. As a result, they may become victims of scams and identity theft, which could lead to financial loss and emotional stress. Equally concerning, engaging with others online can decrease face-to-face communication skills. When people keep using social media to get in touch with others, they may struggle to communicate in real-life situations. Moreover, the relationship between family and friends can be weakened because it is hard to express emotions through online communication, which may cause misunderstandings.
In conclusion, the shift toward online communication among families and friends is driven by lower costs and convenience. Nevertheless, in my opinion, due to privacy concerns and the decline in interpersonal communication abilities, the drawbacks seem to be greater than the benefits. In the long term, heavy reliance on technology can weaken family relationships and friendships in modern society.
