Band 9: People today get less sleep than in the past. What is the cause of this? What are the possible effects of this development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Presently, there is a growing tendency among individuals to dedicate less time to sleeping compared to previous years. This shift can be attributed to the increasing ambition of individuals, leading to various challenges in different areas of their lives.

The primary factor behind this trend is the aspiration of many individuals to acquire the latest and most desirable possessions, such as modern vehicles and homes, both for themselves and their families. They believe that these possessions are essential for gaining social status and enhancing happiness. Consequently, this desire drives them to work longer hours and even hold multiple jobs simultaneously, resulting in late nights and early mornings.

This shift in sleeping patterns can have detrimental effects on individuals’ social interactions, health, and overall productivity. When individuals devote more time to work, they often have less time to spend with their loved ones and friends, leading to superficial relationships. Furthermore, inadequate sleep weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases and mental health issues. Additionally, the lack of sufficient rest impairs individuals’ performance at work, as fatigue sets in, causing a decrease in efficiency. For instance, employees may take twice the time to complete a task that previously required half the time.

In conclusion, the diminishing sleep duration among the population is driven by the pursuit of a better quality of life, but it poses significant challenges if not addressed effectively. Individuals need to recognize the importance of rest and establish a balance between work and personal well-being to mitigate the negative consequences of sleep deprivation.
