It is undeniable that our world is fast-paced in this day and age. Today, we notice this change of pace in everything we see and do, whether at work, home or even in the time we allow for hobbies. Reading has been a method of developing and improving the individual mind since forever. However, with so many responsibilities these days and so little time, many people have reverted to a more simple way of acquiring knowledge. Reading books have been replaced by visuals such as video clips and TV. Nevertheless, the expertise and teaching provided by book-reading cannot be substituted by modern technologies.
One reason that puts reading in a more elevated stance, is the ability to shape one’s brain and assist in evolving creativity and imagination as well as critical-thinking skills. Visuals and sounds have a way of influencing the human mind and supplying it with pre-made assumptions. Reading, on the other hand, does not inspire the brain in this way. A book reader forms their own conclusions and analysis of the characters and events in the book without being directed by any external tools. This, in turn, expands their comprehension and their critical analysis competence. To add on, the mastery of the aforementioned capabilities is a crucial factor in advancing human intellect.
The second purpose of reading is that browsing any written work trains people to be patient. Patience is an important feature and plays a significant role in a person’s success. To demonstrate, self-restraint and forbearance stimulate discipline. Additionally one needs to be consistent and disciplined with their learning to become an accomplished figure. This makes reading a superior source for educating people.
To conclude, visuals can not be used as an alternative to reading -for many reasons. Reading has been the main fountain for attaining knowledge and education and will continue to be.
