English is becoming more widely used around the world due to the development of tourism and globalization. Because of this, some believe that people around the globe will only use English to communicate. This essay aims to explore both the benefits and the drawbacks of this phenomenon.
One major advantage of having one global language is the reduction of language barriers. With English being the only language in use, communicating with people from other countries becomes much easier. For example, many foreigners struggle to understand the locals while traveling because they speak different languages. However, if everyone spoke the same language, talking to the locals would be more convenient. This would improve the traveling experience, encouraging even more tourists.
Nonetheless, the dominance of one single language around the world results in the loss of culture in many areas. The diversity of languages plays a crucial role in preserving and representing each country’s uniqueness. Having one language in the world leads to the disappearance of local cultures and values. For instance, the language of Romani is at risk of disappearing completely due to cultural shocks from tourism in recent years. Despite that, the government of Romania still prioritizes in teaching students English, which worsens the situation.
In conclusion, the contribution of tourism to the prevalence of English around the world helps to remove the laguage barrier, but it also negatively affects the existence of local cultures. I contend that English should only be a global communication tool, not the only language that can be spoken in the world.
